Interpol AI Toolkit: Empowering police to leverage artificial intelligence responsibly

AI technologies have huge potential to support the work of law enforcement agencies. Successful examples of areas where AI systems are successfully used include automatic patrol systems, identification of vulnerable and exploited children, and police emergency call centers.

At the same time, current AI systems have limitations and risks that require awareness and careful consideration by the law enforcement community to either avoid or sufficiently mitigate the issues that can result from their use in police work.

The Toolkit for Responsible AI Innovation in Law Enforcement (AI Toolkit) was developed by INTERPOL in June 2023, together with its longstanding partner, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), with financial support from the European Union, based on the needs expressed by member countries, to fill gaps in terms of guidance on the development, procurement and use of responsible AI in law enforcement agencies. It is intended to help law enforcement agencies address the most pressing challenges when it comes to the use of AI.

The Toolkit has seven parts that cover creating an organizational roadmap, an introduction to responsible AI innovation, an organizational readiness assessment questionnaire, a set of principles for responsible AI innovation, a discussion about putting responsible AI innovation to work, a technical reference book and a risk assessment questionnaire.
