Hotspots policing is one of policing’s most extensively evaluated, and effective, crime control strategies police agencies can employ to reduce crime and disorder. Criminology research has repeatedly shown that crime is often concentrated in small, definable areas within communities. By focusing on these hotspots, police can effectively control more crime with fewer resources. The Koper Curve works in tandem with hotspots policing. Police agencies use analytical processes to identify crime hotspots and assign officers to patrol there. The Koper Curve concept tells them how long to do so. Spoiler alert it’s about 15 minutes.
