Examples of AI in Policing
In this section, we provide some simple examples of how AI can be used (in fact it’s probably already being used) by police officers to be more efficient and effective. All of the text, with the exception of the scenario statements and the prompts, were generated by ChatGPT 4. Most of the images here were produced by ChatGPT’s text-to-image generator DALLE-3.
The entire process of dictating the prompts, ChaptGPT’s writing the text, and then refining the documents with additional prompts, on average took less than 5 minutes.
We hope these examples will give police leaders pause to think about their organizational policies and procedures relative to AI. Just some of the issue they should consider include whether to allow officers to use chatbots like ChatGPT to help them write reports or memos; whether the use of AI be allowed in other administrative tasks like crime analysis, managing the agency budget or monitoring officer wellness metrics; and, have the professional standards/internal affairs personnel been trained in the use of chatbots so they recognize their grammatical fingerprints and to ask complaintants if they used them so as to confirm he/she intended to make the allegations stated in the complaint (because AI can embellish or “hallucinate”).
Anytown Chief’s Podcast Holiday Greeting
The Anytown Chief of Police is pressed for time as his weekly podcast deadline looms. He uses ChaptGPT to create the script for his community holiday message and ElevenLabs’ AI text-to-speech software to produce the message using his cloned voice.
